Ride Classifications

DCC offers a variaty of rides for cyclists of all abilities.  All rides sponsored by DCC are led by members who volunteer their time by selecting a destination and determining a route.

Everyone is welcome on a DCC ride regardless of whether you are a member or not, but we do have some rules.  We hope that after attending a ride with us you will consider becoming a member.

Road ride classifications
Our system includes the starting location, a pace descriptor (A..D), and a distance (miles).  Some ride titles also include the leader's name.  Ride leaders determine the length and pace.

Expected Pace

The number shown is the speed riders are expected to be able to ride over the duration of the ride.  This means your average pace for the entire ride and not only on the flat. Cruising speed on the flat may be about 2 mph faster than the average pace, depending on local terrain.

A

18-21 mph

An "A" rider is in excellent condition, can maintain a 19 mph pace for extended periods, and complete a century (100 miles) in under 7 hours.
The ride pace is fast.  the riders are strong recreational riders and racers.

B

15-18 mph

A "B" is a strong rider, feels comfortable sharing the road with traffic, and can complete a 65 mile ride in under 5 hours.
The ride pace is brisk; these are for strong recreational riders.  The pace may reach 20 mph on the flats and some drafting may occur. The ride generally regroups at the top of long climbs.

C

12-15 mph

A "C" rider is a confident and experienced rider, in good condition, can handle most traffic conditions and can complete a 40 mile ride in 4 hours.
The pace varies but is generally not faster than 18 mph.  The ride regroups frequently and some drafting may occur.

D

9-12 mph

A "D" rider is a steady rider who may not feel comfortable in traffic and does not wish to attempt rides in excess of 40 miles.  Should be able to complete a 20 mile ride in 3 hours.
These rides take place at a social pace.

Notes

Helmets are required on DCC rides

Riders must sign the Tour Roster before the ride.  Nonmembers are covered by our insurance only on their first ride. and must also sign the roster.  Minors must have parent/guardian sign the roster and be accompanied on the ride by a parent/guardian

Earbuds or headphones are not permitted.

Due to safety concerns during group riding, riders with aerobars are prohibited from using them on club rides.

The use of front and rear lights is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for all evening club rides for your safety. Sometimes rides are delayed due to flat tires, etc.. so there's always a chance you will return at dusk or later.

BE PREPARED for fixing your own flat.. have a bag on the back of your bike with spare tube, tire irons, mini air pump.  Practice fixing flats or take a class prior to group rides, you should be able to fix your own flats as we discourage ride leaders from fixing flats for liability reasons.

Classification of + or - may be used with any classification to indicate a pace near the high or low end of that classification.  For instance, if you can comfortably cruise at 12-13 mph, you will struggle to keep up with a C+ pace where the average is 14.5-15 and cruises at 17 on the flats.  Choose a ride that fits your style and ability.  We want you  to have fun with group riding.

Club rides are "no drop" rides and the leader will stop to regroup at turns or after climbs or may designate an experienced rider to stay with you if you can't keep up with the group (do your best to choose rides that meet your abilities).  Many leaders will lead from the front to show the way, though cue sheets (or gps routes) are typically provided.  Leader may designate a sweeper to ensure no one is dropped. In some cases leaders will lead from the mid or back of the pack, depending on the ride/route/attendees. If regular club riders know the route, some may go out front at faster paces, but the leader will be responsible for riding pace posted and for all riders returning safely to the start. (unless they abandon the ride by going out front without knowing route or let the leader know they are planning to shorten ride, etc..)

We welcome you to DCC and look forward to seeing you on our next club ride!
